Where to stay near Big Bend: 16 places by drive time
Four minutes to the park gate is a different trip from two hours to the Basin. Choose your bed around the days you want to have.
By Diego Salinas, Staff Writer
The Short Answer
Start with Study Butte. It's the closest town to the park, 3 miles from the west entrance and about 34 minutes from Panther Junction. If you can land a room at the Chisos Mountains Lodge, take it. You'll wake up inside the Chisos Basin, 17 minutes from headquarters.
- Chisos Mountains Lodge, the only rooms inside the park. The restaurant is closed for now, so plan your dinners.
- Big Bend Station, 4 minutes from the Maverick entrance, with gas and a store on site.
- Stardust Big Bend, A-frames with full kitchens, 37 minutes to Panther Junction.
- Willow House, 12 concrete casitas on 287 acres. No guests under 12.
- Gage Hotel, a 1927 hotel in Marathon, 1 hour 13 minutes to Panther Junction.
Every rental near Big Bend says it’s close to the park. Some of them mean it. Big Bend Station sits 4 minutes from the west gate. The Holland Hotel in Alpine sits almost two hours from the Chisos Basin.
That gap adds up fast. Book three nights in Alpine instead of Study Butte, hike in the Basin each day, and you add about 7.5 hours of driving. That’s a full workday of your vacation spent watching the road.
So we timed it. We mapped the drive from 16 places to sleep, from the park’s only lodge to motels, A-frame cabins, space pods and ranch rentals. Each one is sorted by minutes to Panther Junction, the park headquarters, with a second time for the Chisos Basin.
We also asked the question most listings skip. Where does the shower water come from? Out here it might be a town system, a well, a rain tank or a truck. The answer changes how you live for a few days.

How we chose them
We built the list from NPS lodging pages, the Visit Big Bend lodging directory, Google hotel listings and each property’s own website. We kept places with a working website or phone line on October 6, 2026. We cut The Maverick Inn in Alpine because Google Maps listed it as temporarily closed that day.
Every drive time comes from Google Maps on October 6, 2026. We routed each property to the Panther Junction Visitor Center and the Chisos Basin Visitor Center with no stops. Real days run longer. The park speed limit tops out at 45 mph, and wildlife crosses the road at dusk.
This is desk research. We didn’t stay at these places for this update. Water and power notes report what each property publishes, and when a property says nothing, we tell you that too. Here’s how we work.
Two drive times, and why the Basin one matters
Panther Junction is the park headquarters. It has the main visitor center and a gas station, and most park roads meet there. The Chisos Basin holds the lodge, the campground and the Window View Trail. If you want sunrise on the Lost Mine Trail, the Basin time is the one to watch.
Here’s the twist. Coming from the west, you reach Basin Junction before Panther Junction. So from Study Butte, the Basin is only about 8 minutes farther than headquarters. From Marathon it’s about 16 minutes farther, because you reach headquarters first and keep driving west.
Alpine is the odd one out. Google routes you through Marathon to reach Panther Junction, a 98-mile trip. For the Basin, it sends you down TX 118 instead, about 106 miles.
Think of the lodging as rings around the park. Study Butte and the FM 170 strip into Terlingua sit 34 to 42 minutes from headquarters. TX 118 north, Lajitas and Camel Hump Road run 41 to 56. Marathon, Terlingua Ranch and Alpine all run past an hour.
City water, hauled water or off-grid solar
Terlingua has no water plant that serves everyone, the Texas Tribune reported in 2024. So the place you book decides how long your shower can be.
The area also grew fast. Short-term rentals near Terlingua jumped from 133 in 2018 to 399 in 2024, according to AirDNA numbers cited by the Tribune. More guests, same desert.
| Setup | Where you’ll find it | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| City or system water, grid power | In-town hotels in Alpine. The Chisos Basin. Homes inside the Study Butte Water Supply Corporation’s area. Terlingua Ranch’s well system. | Showers work like they do at home. Outages still happen, as Study Butte learned in 2023. |
| Hauled water or private wells | Many rentals outside those systems, on ranch land off FM 170 and TX 118. | Your water sits in a tank. Plan short showers and ask when the tank gets refilled. |
| Off-grid solar | Some rentals, pods and cabins on remote land. | Power comes from panels and batteries. Ask what the batteries can run after dark. |
What the numbers say
- The Study Butte Water Supply Corporation serves a set area around Study Butte. In 2014 it sold 8.4 million gallons through 227 taps. By 2023 it sold 18 million gallons with about the same number of taps.
- In October 2023, that system’s wells failed. A do-not-use notice stayed up until October 27, Marfa Public Radio reported.
- Terlingua Ranch covers about 200,000 acres and has five wells. It sells water to registered owners, and its 2024 limits apply to owners, not to tourists in rental cabins.
- Inside the park, the NPS plans to repair the Chisos Basin water system. Watch the NPS alerts page for work dates.
Six questions to ask a host before you book
- Does the water come from a utility, a well, rain tanks or a truck?
- How big is the tank, and how often does it get filled?
- Is the toilet a regular flush toilet or a composting one?
- Is the power from the grid or from solar? Can it run the AC all night in May?
- Is the road paved, or do I need high clearance?
- Is there cell service, Wi-Fi or Starlink?
A former Terlingua water board chair gave visitors the same advice in the Tribune. Pick lodging that saves water, and ask your host where it comes from. Keep showers to about five minutes, turn the water off while you soap up and flush less often. It keeps the wells working for the people who live here.

Chisos Mountains Lodge in the Chisos Basin. Chisos Mountains Lodge / Official website Nothing beats waking up inside the park. The lodge sits in a bowl of peaks where nights run cooler than the desert floor. You’re steps from the Window View Trail and a short drive from the Lost Mine trailhead.
The catch in 2026 is food. The dining room and bar are closed. A food truck behind the old restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, so pack groceries for dinner.
The NPS cancelled a planned lodge rebuild on April 1, 2026, so the Basin stays open. One warning for RV drivers. The road up isn’t built for RVs over 24 feet or trailers over 20 feet.

Big Bend National Park vacation rentals, zone by zone
Most Big Bend National Park vacation rentals sit in four zones. Pick the zone first and the house second. The zone decides your drive, and often your water.
Study Butte and FM 170 to the Ghost Town
This is the closest zone, 34 to 42 minutes from Panther Junction. Most Terlingua lodging sits here, along with the stores and gas. Some homes sit on gravel roads, and one Ghost Town-area listing we found tells guests a high-clearance vehicle is a good idea.
Staying here for a river day? Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company runs a guided Rio Grande canyon float from Terlingua. Boats and routes depend on river levels. Pack your own lunch and confirm the meeting point. Viator lists this trip as non-refundable, so check the terms before you pay.
TX 118 north of Study Butte
Expect 41 to 56 minutes. You trade a longer grocery run for more land and fewer neighbors.
Lajitas
About 54 minutes. You get resort homes with kitchens, golf and a general store. It’s also the closest zone to Big Bend Ranch State Park.
Terlingua Ranch
Plan on 1 hour 17 minutes or more. The main ranch road is paved, but many homes sit off dirt side roads. Plenty of rentals here run on tanks, wells or solar, so ask the six questions above before you book.
The whole region sits inside the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve. DarkSky International calls it the largest dark sky reserve in the world, at more than 9 million acres from Fort Davis to the Rio Grande. Whichever zone you pick, step outside after 10 p.m. and look up.
Booking tips for any Big Bend Airbnb or Vrbo
- Use the map view and drag it to your zone. Listing town names are loose, and Terlingua Ranch homes more than an hour from the park still use a Terlingua address.
- Filter for air conditioning from April through September.
- Read the house rules for water limits, and check the photos for the bathroom.
- Look at local managers too. Big Bend Vacation Rentals, for one, manages homes near Terlingua and Lajitas.

Camping inside the park
If the lodge is full, a campsite is the only other way to sleep inside the park. The three NPS campgrounds book on Recreation.gov and cost $16 a night.
| Campground | Sites | Season | Booking window | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chisos Basin | 60 | Year-round | Most sites 6 months out, a few 2 weeks out | 5,400 feet, so it runs cooler. RVs over 24 feet and trailers over 20 feet should skip the Basin road. |
| Rio Grande Village | 100 | Year-round | A mix of 6 months and 2 weeks out | Near the river and very hot from April to September |
| Cottonwood | 30 | Closed for summer, reopens November 1, 2026 | 2 weeks out | Near Castolon. No generators allowed. |
| Rio Grande Village RV Park | 25 full hookups | Year-round | Through the lodge’s operator | Not an NPS campground, so the $16 rate doesn’t apply |
From February 1 to April 15, the park caps campers at 14 nights total. See the NPS campground page for current rules.
When to book Big Bend lodging
November through March is the best time to visit, so that’s when beds go first. The Texas Tribune reports that tourist season kicks off with the Terlingua chili cookoff in early November. Spring break in March fills the region.
Book in this order. Try for the lodge or a Basin campsite first. Then fill your other nights in Study Butte or Terlingua. Save Marathon and Alpine for the first or last night of a road trip, like the route in our Big Bend loop road trip.
Summer brings the heat. Highs near Rio Grande Village can top 100 degrees, while the Basin runs cooler. That’s one more reason to grab a lodge room early.
The park pass costs $30 per vehicle and covers 7 days, and the park takes cards only. Big Bend isn’t one of the 11 parks charging the 2026 nonresident fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there lodging inside Big Bend National Park?
Yes, but only one place. The Chisos Mountains Lodge has 72 rooms and cottages in the Chisos Basin at 5,400 feet. As of October 2026, its restaurant is closed and a food truck serves breakfast and lunch. The NPS cancelled a planned rebuild in April 2026, so the Basin stays open. The only other way to sleep in the park is at a campground.
Where is the best place to stay near Big Bend National Park?
Study Butte is the best base outside the park. It sits 3 miles from the west entrance and about 34 minutes from Panther Junction. You'll find gas, a grill, a store and a cluster of motels there. Terlingua, just west on FM 170, adds 3 to 8 minutes. Marathon and Alpine work best for one night on a road trip.
How far is Terlingua from Big Bend National Park?
Terlingua starts about 3 miles from the park's west entrance at Study Butte. From the Terlingua Ghost Town, Panther Junction is about 30 miles away, roughly 42 minutes. The Chisos Basin is about 33 miles, roughly 50 minutes. Lodging farther out FM 170 toward Lajitas adds more time.
Are there cabins in Big Bend?
Yes. Inside the park, the Chisos Mountains Lodge rents five Roosevelt Stone Cottages. Outside it, Stardust Big Bend has ten A-frame cabins with full kitchens, and Chisos Mining Co. Motel rents small and large cabins. Terlingua Ranch Lodge has 32 cabin rooms, 1 hour 17 minutes from Panther Junction.
Is the Chisos Mountains Lodge restaurant open?
No. As of October 6, 2026, the NPS lists the lodge restaurant as closed. A food truck outside the main lodge building opens daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a break from 10 to 11 a.m. Bring groceries for dinner. Panther Junction and Rio Grande Village both have stores.
Do Big Bend vacation rentals have running water?
Usually, but the source varies. Some homes are on the Study Butte water system or Terlingua Ranch wells. Others use private wells, rain tanks or hauled water stored in a tank. Ask your host where the water comes from and how big the tank is, then plan on short showers.
Is Alpine or Marathon a better base for Big Bend?
Marathon is closer, about 1 hour 13 minutes from Panther Junction compared with 1 hour 43 minutes from Alpine. Pick Alpine if you want groceries, more restaurants or Amtrak. Neither works well as a base for more than a night, since you'd spend 2.5 to 4 hours a day in the car.
When should I book Big Bend lodging?
Book as soon as your dates are set, especially for November through March. Spring break and holiday weekends fill fast. Basin campsites open 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov, and the lodge may apply a minimum stay on busy dates.
