The 12 Best Bars in Austin, Ranked for 2026

Nickel City has the strongest mix of national recognition, useful hours and fair prices. It landed at No. 96 on North America’s 50 Best Bars in 2026. The Spirited Awards also put its team in the national Top 10. Those are different honors, and both are current.

The room does not act like an awards case. Drinks have been served on this site since 1934. Travis Tober and Brandon Hunt run it now. The whiskey list is deep, while the frozen Irish coffee is the easy group order. The 50 Best listing puts an average cocktail near $10.

Delray Cafe cooks in the back seven days a week. Its coneys, patty melt and tots turn a late drink into a full stop. The bar opens at noon and closes at 2 a.m. every day. Walk in, but leave time for street parking.

Papercut opened in December 2024 and built a national record quickly. Esquire named it one of America’s 14 best bars in June 2026. It was the only Texas bar on that list. The Pinnacle Guide gave it two pins, and the Spirited Awards put it in the 2025 national Top 10 for Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar.

Eric Schild, Corey O’Neil and Dragan Milivojevic run the room around one painting show at a time. Karen Offutt’s Dream State stays up through August 27. When the art changes, the printed drinks zine changes too.

The PAPER CUT v2 mixes mezcal, tangerine liqueur, Aperol, pomegranate, pineapple and lemon. The Fisherman’s Michelada leans salty and hot. Papercut does not publish prices, so ask before building a full round. Walk-ins are the rule, and Tuesday is the closed night.

The Classics Board carries 53 drinks across seven eras. It starts before 1880 and ends with modern standards. That makes The Roosevelt Room the clearest choice for a group that wants Manhattans, tiki drinks and newer recipes at one table.

Some orders are built for the room to watch. The Cigar Box arrives on an ashtray with a flamed cinnamon stick. The Zombie comes in a skull. The Blue Blazer is lit in front of the guest. Daily happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. offers twelve classics at $12.

The Spirited Awards named the bar a 2026 regional Top 10 honoree for Best U.S. Bar Team. Reservations are available, and a mezzanine bar adds seats when the main floor fills. Service ends at midnight early in the week and 2 a.m. from Thursday through Saturday.

The building began as a grain store in 1917. Rosalio “Rabbit” Duran started Rabbit’s Lounge in 1967 and moved it to this address in 1969. The upstairs office became a base for Chicano political work. Duran retired in 2011, and Whisler’s opened two years later.

Downstairs now gets four seasonal cocktail lists each year. Happy hour runs daily. The Austin Chronicle readers poll named Whisler’s its 2025 Cocktail Bar winner, while Time Out ranks it near the top of the city.

Mezcaleria Tobala opens upstairs from Wednesday through Saturday. It serves half pours of wild agave in clay cups, including bottles made for the bar. The upstairs room is reached by a narrow staircase.

Go for the dancing. The White Horse is a working East Austin honky tonk with a wooden floor, pool tables and a stage. The Austin Chronicle named it the 2026 Bar for Singles readers poll winner. Its live calendar changes the feel of each night, so check the bill first.

Bomb Tacos cooks from the trailer out back. Its July menu kept tacos near $3 and burgers near $8. Those prices can move, but the setup stays useful. You can eat without leaving the patio or giving up a place near the floor.

Doors open at 3 p.m. and close at 2 a.m. daily. The whole bar is 21 and up. There are no reservations or table service, and popular shows fill the dance floor early.

Parley opened on December 19, 2025. Four months later it won Bar of the Year at the CultureMap Austin Tastemaker Awards. The Austin Chronicle also gave it a 2026 critics pick. That is a fast start, though its public review sample was still small in July.

Terance Robson and Jack “Slim” Hogan both worked at Here Nor There. Robson wrote the drinks list. Finding Memo is a frozen mix of rum, Guinness, allspice, condensed milk and vanilla gelato. The Fish and Chips Martini uses nori, olive oil and saline.

Oseyo sends food through the shared wall. Its owner, Lynn Miller, wrote the bar menu. Parley opens at 11 a.m. and keeps going to 2 a.m. every day. The official site does not post a full menu with prices, so check at the bar.

Here Nor There is the formal night on this list. The entrance sits behind a coded gate in an alley near the Driskill. A reservation triggers the text with the code. Downstairs, a stuffed bear holds the welcome tray and 55 seats fill the room.

Lone Star Living is the current menu. Old Doc uses Balcones whiskey and Ron Zacapa 23 with a house amaro built to recall Dr Pepper. The Dry Rub Daiquiri brings in jackfruit, black pepper, hickory and corn. Most cocktails start over $20, while a Guinness costs $7.

Drink.Well tells you what things cost. Most classics are $13, while the old fashioned is $14. Happy hour drops its listed classics to $10 from Monday through Friday until 5:30 p.m. House originals run $15 to $16.

The menu credits most new drinks to their bartenders. Half Moon Bay and Baptism by Fire are marked as legacy-list drinks instead. Half Moon Bay is a whisky sour with Suntory Toki, Amaro Montenegro, rhubarb, coconut, lemon and sea salt.

A scratch kitchen serves a $21 cheeseburger with fries. The bar has 38 indoor seats and 20 on the patio. It does not take reservations for small parties. Every bill adds a 20 percent Employee Wellness Fee, so include that when comparing prices.

Pam Pritchard opened The Tigress in May 2010 after two decades as a biotech microbiologist. She still runs it. The Austin Chronicle readers poll named it the 2026 Cocktail Bar winner.

The room feels closer to a living room than a downtown club. Small screens show black-and-white films with the sound off. A painted tiger guards the door. Herbs for the drinks grow on the back patio, and the menu names the bartender behind each cocktail.

July prices ran from $10 for a Mai Tai to $13 for the Tropical Polar Bear. Wednesday takes $3 off classics all night. Parking is free in the lot and on the street. The room closes at midnight, which suits a quieter night better than a bar crawl.

Lala’s has kept Christmas up since 1972. Reindeer sit on the roof. Tinsel and lights cover the room, and an Elvis shrine occupies one corner. The joke could have worn thin decades ago. The bar kept it simple enough to last.

The drinks follow the theme. The Naughty Nugget mixes tequila, pineapple, habanero, lime and orange. The Snowball uses Rumple Minze, Kahlua and RumChata. Drink prices are not published.

Pool tables fill the back and an awning covers the patio. There is no kitchen, but outside food is allowed. Lala’s accepts reservations from January through October, then stops during its busiest two months.

Deep Eddy Cabaret opened in 1951 under Raymond and Mickey Hickman. It turned 75 in 2026. The room became a City of Austin historic landmark in July 2024 and later received a fiscal year 2025 heritage grant.

The city recognition left the bar itself unchanged. Two tournament-size pool tables sit in the back. A jukebox gets more attention in reviews than the drinks. There is no kitchen, no table service and no reserved seating.

Doors open at noon and close at 2 a.m. every day. Parking is free in the lot and on nearby streets. The old room is the draw. The cocktail list stays simple beside the downtown entries.

Cheer Up Charlies has a deep recent local-award record. It won the 2026 Austin Chronicle readers polls for Bartender and Trivia Night. In 2025 it won LGBTQIA Club and Bar for Singles. Time Out ranks it near the top of Austin’s bars.

Maggie Lea and Tamara Hoover opened the business in 2010. They moved to 900 Red River in 2014. The building had housed the lesbian bar Chance’s from 1982 to 1994. The current bar keeps a vegan list, kombucha on tap and two stages.

The owners raised money for overdue rent in 2025 and resolved a one-day lockout in March 2026. The bar is open now, Thursday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Its four-night schedule explains the lower reliability score.
