How We Chose Them

We scored bachelor's and master's degrees in separate groups. The bachelor's ranking puts value and access first. The master's ranking puts curriculum first.

  1. Required curriculum, 25% for bachelor's and 40% for master's. Required statistics, code, data systems, machine learning, and ethics courses earned credit. Optional classes earned less.
  2. Required applied work, 10% for bachelor's and 25% for master's. A required capstone, project, internship, or research block scored higher than case work inside a normal class.
  3. Access and value, 50% for bachelor's and 20% for master's. We compared resident base prices, total credits, transfer routes, and added fees within each degree level. Aid and other charges can change the price.
  4. Format and fit, 15%. Campus, online, full-time, and part-time routes all counted. A fixed start term or course order lowered the score.

We began with 14 Texas programs and kept 10. From August 10 through 12, 2026, we checked school catalogs, degree plans, price pages, faculty records, and format rules. The bachelor's prices are full-time resident base figures. They are not final bills or net prices. Each school counts fees in a different way. Aid, housing, course charges, and other fees can change the total. The score shown for each program is the weighted total, rounded to one decimal. We left campus Google stars and school reputation out. We also left job outcomes out because the programs do not publish a current set that we can compare.

The 10 Best Data Science Degree Programs in Texas

Ranks 1-4 compare bachelor's programs under a value-first rubric, with A&M-Victoria at No. 1. Ranks 5-10 compare master's programs, with UNT at No. 5 as our top master's pick. Scores only compare degrees at the same level. Displayed-score ties use the unrounded total.

  1. No. 1: Texas A&M University-Victoria

    Victoria4.6(Our weighted bachelor's score)Price: $4,383.54 resident schedule at 15 hours

The lowest full-time resident base price in this group, online study, and a direct transfer route put A&M-Victoria first for value and access.

University North at Texas A&M University-Victoria, with red flowers in front
University North stands on the Texas A&M University-Victoria campus in Victoria.

A&M-Victoria takes our top bachelor’s spot for value and access. Its 2026-27 resident base price is $4,383.54 for 15 hours. Extra fees may apply. That price is about 25% below UTA and UT Austin. It is 40% below UT Dallas’s incoming-resident variable-plan example. Aid and housing can change what a student pays.

The 36-hour Data Science concentration has 12 courses. Students take Python, database systems, data visualization, and analytics. Two statistics courses add the math. Privacy and ethics also appear in the required plan. Management and marketing put those tools in a business setting.

The school lists both Victoria and online study. Victoria College also publishes a direct AS-to-BS transfer map. That mix gives students more ways to keep housing and transfer costs down.

Faculty is another reason to look closely. Hardik Gohel teaches data science and AI. He won A&M-Victoria’s 2026 Faculty Award for Distinguished Teaching. He leads the Applied AI Research Lab. He also invites motivated college students to join his research team. Hongyu Guo leads the BS Computer Information Systems program. His work includes machine learning, AI, data mining, and big-data systems.

The degree is a BS in Computer Information Systems. Data Science is the concentration. The published plan names no required machine learning class, capstone, or internship. Ask how to add applied work before you enroll.

Top bachelor's and best value: Choose this for the lowest full-time resident base price in the group. It also has online study, a transfer map, and faculty who work in AI research.

UT Dallas shares this degree across two schools. They are Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science. The 46-hour major core spans math and code. It covers data structures, databases, big data, and machine learning. Calculus, probability, and statistics carry equal weight.

A required four-credit capstone closes the degree. The 2026 catalog maps the early course order. It puts physics, calculus, and code before upper-level work. That sequence makes the transfer risk easy to spot.

Transfer students need the early math and CS core first. One missing course can block several later classes. Ask for a term-by-term map before you transfer. Then place those credits in the 120-hour plan.

Plan before transfer: Get a term-by-term map first. Then move credits into this 120-hour program.

UT Austin puts statistics first. The major core has seven courses. It covers probability, machine learning, and advanced methods. The case studies class uses those skills. Students solve one full data task.

The base is wider than those 22 major hours. Calculus, linear algebra, code, and databases are also required. A 12-hour breadth field adds another subject. The plan leaves 30 free-elective hours. That is room for a minor or more code.

The plan has no separate required capstone. UT admission does not promise this major. Check the major-entry rules first. Then add Austin housing to the posted tuition.

Best statistics-led BS: Choose this for statistics and machine learning. You still have room to add another field.

  8. No. 8: Rice University

    Houston4.5(Our weighted master's score)Price: From $52,700 online tuition

Rice requires the deepest core and a four-credit capstone, but its published online price cuts the access score.

Duncan Hall at Rice University in Houston

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best data science degree programs in Texas?

Texas A&M University-Victoria is our top bachelor's pick for value and access. Its 2026-27 resident base price is $4,383.54 for 15 hours. The school lists both Victoria and online study. UNT is our top master's pick because it offers online access and several final paths. UTA, UT Dallas, UT Austin, Houston, and Texas Tech also score well within their degree groups.

Is a data science degree worth it in Texas?

A data science degree can be worth it when the course plan fits the job you want and the debt stays low. Look for real work in statistics, Python, databases, machine learning, and a capstone. Ask each school for recent job data before you pay a deposit.

Are there online data science degree programs in Texas?

Yes. Texas A&M University-Victoria lists an online bachelor's route. Texas Tech, UNT, Rice, and SMU have online master's options. Check live class times and campus rules before you apply. SMU, for example, requires two campus immersion events.

How long does a data science degree take in Texas?

A Texas bachelor's degree often takes four years and about 120 credits. The master's plans here run from 30 to 36 credits. Full-time plans can take one year, while online and part-time routes often take about two years. Transfer credit and early math courses can change that time.

What should I look for in a data science degree?

Look for statistics, code, databases, machine learning, ethics, and a final project. Then check the math needed before the first term. A sound plan should show how students work with messy data and test a model. It should also show how they explain the result and get help when the work gets hard.
